The above portrait beautifully illustrates how simplicity in a background can often create a more dramatic result. The selected proof on the left shows background elements that would distract from the subject and could appear “busy.” By cropping in more closely on the subject, painting out the rug and legs of the settee, and removing the doors behind the subject, the artist has created a simple yet more powerful and dramatic portrait. If, however, the client wished to leave in certain background elements, the artist would artfully and subtly edit the background elements so that they support the overall portrait but remain secondary to the subject.
